Short answer

Different kinds of pimples include clogged pores, inflamed acne spots, and follicle-centred bumps, each needing a different assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a pimple may look like

Whiteheads and blackheads are clogged pores. Papules are small, red, raised spots without visible fluid; pustules have a white or yellow centre. Deeper nodules and cyst-like lesions can feel tender and may leave marks or scars. The distribution matters: acne often affects the face, chest, or back, while folliculitis tends to produce similar bumps around hairs. Shaving-related razor bumps cluster where short hairs curl back into skin.

Not every facial bump is acne. Perioral dermatitis can cause small bumps around the mouth, nose, or eyes, while rosacea may combine acne-like spots with flushing. Hormonal acne often follows a recurring pattern around the lower face, but a clinician must assess the complete history and skin examination.

Practical steps

Wash gently, avoid scrubbing, and leave spots alone rather than squeezing them. Choose products labelled non-comedogenic if clogged pores are a concern, and clean shaving equipment regularly. Note where bumps appear, whether they itch or hurt, and whether they follow shaving, sweating, or a menstrual cycle. A clinician can distinguish acne from folliculitis, hormonal acne, rosacea, or perioral dermatitis and select treatment; LED light therapy may be discussed for some acne plans.

When to seek care

Arrange a dermatology review when spots are deep, painful, widespread, leaving scars, or not settling with gentle skin care. Seek prompt advice for a sudden rash with fever, rapidly increasing warmth and swelling, or painful eye symptoms. Recurrent bumps after shaving, or a pattern that repeatedly returns around the mouth, deserves assessment because the treatment for razor bumps or dermatitis differs from acne treatment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the bumps are clogged pores, acne, folliculitis, or another condition; which ingredients should be used or avoided; and how long to try a plan before reviewing it. If you shave, ask about hair-removal technique, and ask how to reduce dark marks or scars after inflammation settles.

Questions people ask

Should I squeeze a pimple?

Squeezing can push inflammation deeper and increase the chance of marks or scarring, so gentle care is safer.

Are itchy bumps always acne?

No. Itch can point toward folliculitis, irritation, or another rash, although acne can sometimes itch as well.
