Difference between true and false labour

False labour, also called practice contractions or Braxton Hicks contractions, can tighten the uterus without producing progressive cervical change. The tightenings may be irregular, vary in strength, and stop after rest, hydration, a position change, or a warm shower. True labour generally develops a consistent pattern; contractions last longer, feel stronger, and come closer together as labour progresses.

Only a maternity assessment can establish whether the cervix is changing. A mucus plug or small amount of blood-streaked mucus may occur near labour, but bleeding or fluid leakage needs specific advice.

Time contractions from the start of one to the start of the next, and note their duration. Rest, drink fluids, and use comfort measures recommended by your maternity team. Pack essential documents and keep transport and contact arrangements ready. Follow your own birth plan rather than relying on a fixed contraction pattern, since timing can differ between pregnancies.

Call promptly for regular contractions, waters breaking, vaginal bleeding, reduced fetal movement, or severe continuous pain. Contact the maternity unit urgently if labour signs occur earlier than expected, because preterm labour requires assessment. Seek emergency help for heavy bleeding, fainting, or severe illness.
