Difference between false and true labour pain

Short answer
False labour contractions are usually irregular and may settle with rest or movement, while true labour contractions become regular, stronger and closer together.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Practice contractions
- Irregular tightening that may settle
- True labour
- A progressive pattern of stronger, closer contractions
How contractions change
Practice contractions, often called Braxton Hicks contractions, may feel like tightening across the abdomen. They can be uncomfortable but commonly remain unpredictable and do not steadily intensify. Established labour tends to develop a repeating rhythm: contractions last longer, become more intense and leave less time between them. Back pressure, pelvic heaviness, a mucus plug or fluid leakage can occur, but no single symptom confirms labour. Your maternity team can assess the cervix and the baby's wellbeing when the pattern is uncertain.
What to track at home
Time contractions from the beginning of one to the beginning of the next, and record how long each lasts. Drink fluids, rest, change position and notice whether the tightening settles. Keep your maternity contact details and transport plan ready. If pregnancy is before term, regular tightening, pelvic pressure, backache or a change in discharge should be reported promptly because preterm labour can begin with subtle symptoms.
When to contact maternity care
Contact your maternity unit for regular painful contractions, suspected waters breaking, vaginal bleeding, reduced fetal movement or concern that labour is starting before term. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe constant abdominal pain, fainting or an emergency involving you or the baby. Do not wait for contractions to become perfectly regular when fluid has leaked or fetal movement has changed.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which contraction pattern your unit wants you to report, how to recognise fluid leakage, and where to go after hours. Confirm the plan if you have had preterm labour symptoms or other pregnancy concerns.
