Short answer

Braxton Hicks contractions are often irregular and settle with rest or a change of activity, while labour contractions tend to become stronger, longer, closer together, and continue despite those changes.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Braxton Hicks
Often irregular and may ease after rest or movement change
Possible labour
A pattern that strengthens, lasts longer, and comes closer together

How the sensations can differ

Braxton Hicks may feel like tightening across the abdomen. They can be uncomfortable but commonly remain unpredictable and do not steadily build. Labour contractions usually develop a pattern, intensify, and may bring backache, pelvic pressure, or a show of mucus. The cervix can only be assessed by a maternity professional, so sensation alone cannot confirm labour.

Not every labour follows the same pattern. If contractions occur before your expected time of birth, they may signal preterm labour and need prompt advice even if they are not very painful.

What you can do while watching the pattern

Note when each tightening starts, how long it lasts, and the gap until the next one. Rest, change position, empty your bladder, and drink fluids if you have not been told to restrict them. Keep your maternity contact details and transport plan ready. Follow your hospital's instructions about when to call or attend, because local guidance differs.

Do not dismiss contractions because they are manageable. A phone assessment can help decide whether you need examination or monitoring.

When to seek urgent assessment

Call your maternity unit urgently for vaginal bleeding, leaking or suspected waters breaking, reduced fetal movement, severe constant abdominal pain, fever, fainting, or contractions that are regular, painful, or increasing. If you are before term, report repeated tightening, pelvic pressure, low backache, or fluid leakage promptly because preterm labour requires assessment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask how your unit defines established labour, which number to call overnight, how to time contractions, and what to do if your waters break or fetal movement changes.
