Does diastasis recti go away?

Short answer
Diastasis recti may narrow or become less noticeable over time, but recovery varies; targeted rehabilitation can improve trunk control even when a gap remains.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How recovery works
Diastasis recti is stretching and reduced tension in the connective tissue between the abdominal muscles. The width of that area is only one part of the picture. Tension, strength, breathing, posture, pain, and how well you manage pressure during movement also matter.
After pregnancy, the abdominal wall may gradually regain support as tissues adapt and activity returns. Some people have a lasting separation without meaningful symptoms. Others need help because weakness, back discomfort, or pelvic-floor changes interfere with caring for themselves or a baby.
Ways to support improvement
Practise slow breathing, gentle abdominal activation, and movements that you can perform without pain or repeated doming. Use side-rolling to rise from bed and keep loads close to your body. Increase challenge in small stages instead of testing the midline with strenuous exercises.
A clinician trained in postnatal rehabilitation can assess function and create a plan for your current stage, including return to sport or heavier lifting. Postnatal Physiotherapy is one option for guided assessment and exercise progression.
When an assessment is sensible
Book an appointment if symptoms remain troublesome, your progress has stalled, or you are unsure whether a bulge is separation or a hernia. Seek urgent care for severe or rapidly worsening pain, repeated vomiting, faintness, or a firm painful lump that cannot be gently reduced.
Useful questions
What findings show that my abdominal wall is improving? Which exercises fit my symptoms now? How should I lift my child or household items? Do my back or pelvic-floor symptoms change the plan? What is a sensible progression toward my usual activities?

Questions people ask
Can it improve without surgery?
Many people manage symptoms with education, movement changes, and rehabilitation. A clinician can discuss options if function remains limited.
Does a remaining gap mean treatment failed?
No. Better tension, strength, and daily function can be meaningful progress even when the midline remains separated.
