Diarrhea, fatigue and loss of appetite

Short answer
Diarrhea with fatigue and loss of appetite often accompanies infection or digestive irritation, but persistent symptoms need medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Hydration
- Small, frequent drinks can be easier than a large glass.
- Food
- Eat little and often as appetite returns.
What may explain it
Gastroenteritis can reduce appetite while loose stools and immune activity leave you tired. Influenza and COVID-19 may also cause digestive symptoms alongside general illness. Gastritis, Peptic Ulcer or Hepatitis A can affect appetite and energy in different ways; nausea, upper abdominal discomfort, jaundice or dark urine provide useful clues. Depression can reduce appetite and energy, although new diarrhea still needs its own assessment. Persistent unexplained symptoms should be evaluated rather than assigned to a serious diagnosis without examination.
Supportive care
Take frequent sips of water or oral rehydration solution and eat small portions when able. Soup, rice, toast or yoghurt may be easier to tolerate. Rest, wash hands and avoid alcohol. Record stool changes, appetite, urine, fever, pain, travel, sick contacts and medicines. Do not stop prescribed treatment without advice. If eating remains difficult, ask a clinician or dietitian how to maintain nutrition during recovery.
When to arrange care
Seek urgent help for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, blood or black stool, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, inability to drink or dehydration signs. Prompt assessment is appropriate when appetite stays low, diarrhea persists or recurs, fatigue worsens, weight falls without intention, or yellow skin or eyes develops. Seek earlier advice for a child, older adult, pregnancy, diabetes or significant chronic illness.
Questions for your appointment
Could an infection, medicine or digestive condition explain this pattern? How should I replace fluids and maintain food intake? Which symptoms would suggest liver or pancreatic involvement? Do I need stool, blood or other tests?

Questions people ask
Can gastroenteritis cause fatigue and poor appetite?
Yes. Infection, fluid loss and reduced intake can leave someone tired and less interested in food during recovery.
When is appetite loss with diarrhea concerning?
Arrange assessment when it persists, causes worsening weakness or weight loss, or occurs with dehydration, blood in stool, severe pain or jaundice.
