Diarrhea and vomiting during your period

Short answer
Diarrhea and vomiting during a period may accompany menstrual symptoms, but infection, pregnancy, migraine, or another illness can also be responsible.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Track timing
- Record when symptoms start in relation to bleeding and when they settle.
- Hydration sign
- Reduced urine, dizziness, or unusual weakness can signal dehydration.
What may be happening
Hormonal and inflammatory changes around menstruation can affect bowel movement and trigger nausea. Symptoms that begin with bleeding and settle as the period ends may follow this pattern. Food poisoning, gastroenteritis, or rotavirus infection can cause diarrhea and vomiting at any point, often with cramps, fever, or exposure to illness. Migraine may bring nausea with headache or light sensitivity. Gallstones or pancreatitis can cause prominent upper-abdominal pain. Meningitis is uncommon but needs urgent attention when vomiting occurs with severe headache, stiff neck, confusion, or a rash.
A late or unusual period with vomiting also warrants consideration of pregnancy. Track timing rather than assuming every episode is menstrual.
Relieving symptoms
Take small, frequent sips of water or oral rehydration fluid. Rest, use gentle foods when nausea eases, and avoid alcohol and rich meals. A warm pack may help menstrual cramps. Ask a pharmacist which pain or anti-sickness options are suitable for you, particularly if pregnancy is possible or you have stomach, kidney, or liver problems.
Wash hands carefully and avoid preparing food for others while actively vomiting or having diarrhea. Note bleeding, pain location, fever, headache, and how often you are sick.
When to get urgent help
Get urgent help for inability to keep fluids down, fainting, confusion, very little urine, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, blood or black stool, vomit containing blood, a rigid abdomen, severe headache with stiff neck, or a new rash. Seek medical advice if episodes recur every period, last beyond the bleeding, or are unusually severe.
Questions to ask
Does the timing fit menstrual symptoms, or should infection, pregnancy, migraine, or another cause be checked? How can I prevent dehydration? Which medicines are safe for my circumstances?
