What should you know about diarrhea and chills without fever?

Chills are involuntary muscle contractions that can occur when the body is fighting an infection or reacting to fluid loss. A fever may be absent early, missed by an inaccurate reading, or suppressed by medicine. Diarrhea commonly points toward a bowel illness, but chills can also accompany infections elsewhere. Kidney Infection and Urinary Tract Infection may cause urinary symptoms or back pain; Influenza and Pneumonia may cause cough or breathing symptoms. Travel and mosquito exposure can be relevant to Malaria or Dengue Fever.

Check your temperature with a reliable thermometer and record changes, stool frequency, fluid intake and urination. Sip oral rehydration fluid and rest in a comfortable room. Use light layers during chills and avoid overheating yourself. Do not start leftover antibiotics. If symptoms followed travel, a new medicine, unsafe food or contact with someone ill, tell the clinician because those details help guide assessment.

Get urgent medical help for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, breathing difficulty, a stiff neck, severe abdominal or back pain, blood in stool or urine, or very little urine. Seek prompt assessment if chills are intense or recurring, diarrhea is worsening, or you develop fever. Sepsis can become serious quickly; a rapidly deteriorating person needs emergency care even if a thermometer has not shown fever.
