What should you know about diaphragm myofascial release?

Short answer
Diaphragm myofascial release uses slow, gentle pressure and breathing to reduce tension in fascia around the lower ribs and trunk.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Method
- Slow pressure paired with breathing
- Focus
- Fascia around the ribs and trunk
- Often combined with
- Mobility, posture and strengthening
What the technique targets
Fascia is connective tissue surrounding muscles and other structures. During this approach, a therapist may place a hand beneath the rib margin or on the chest and abdomen, then follow tissue movement while you breathe slowly. The pressure is adjusted to your comfort and is not intended to force a deep stretch.
Some people seek this treatment when tightness accompanies upper-back pain, back muscle spasm or myofascial pain syndrome. The technique addresses movement and sensitivity in a region; it does not diagnose an internal-organ problem and should sit within an individual assessment.
Using it safely
Tell the therapist about abdominal or chest surgery, pregnancy, osteoporosis, a hernia, reflux, unexplained pain, breathing disease, or medicines that affect bleeding. Comfortable clothing and a position that allows easy breathing are helpful.
A session may be followed by gentle mobility, breathing practice, posture work or strengthening. Drink normally unless your clinician has given different advice, and notice how symptoms respond over the next day. Do not copy firm abdominal pressure from a video if you have not been assessed.
When to seek medical care
Stop treatment and obtain urgent medical help for chest pressure, severe breathlessness, fainting, blue lips, coughing blood, sudden severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting or new weakness. These symptoms are not routine treatment soreness.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms are suitable for myofascial treatment, what structures will be addressed, what pressure is appropriate, which home exercises complement it, and when another cause should be investigated.

Questions people ask
Is this the same as a deep abdominal massage?
No. It is a clinician-guided technique using controlled, gentle contact and should be adapted to your history and comfort.
Can it help upper-back tightness?
It may be included when rib, breathing and trunk tissues contribute to movement discomfort, but an assessment is needed to choose appropriate care.
