What should you know about diaper rash paste?

Nappy rash, also called diaper dermatitis, often develops where urine, stool, warmth and rubbing weaken the skin barrier. A thick layer of a bland barrier paste can shield the area from wetness and reduce contact with irritants. It does not identify the cause or treat every rash. A rash that is bright red in the folds, has small spots around its edge, or keeps spreading may need a different assessment, including consideration of yeast.

Change the nappy promptly, rinse with lukewarm water or use a fragrance-free cleanser, and pat rather than rub. Apply paste to clean, dry skin in a visible protective coating; do not scrape every trace away at each change if the skin is still protected. Give short periods without a nappy when practical, and avoid fragranced wipes, talc and harsh antiseptics. Arrange medical advice if the rash is worsening, involves open sores, blisters, pus, bleeding or marked swelling, or causes significant discomfort. Seek prompt help if the child is feverish, unusually sleepy, feeding poorly, or appears unwell. A rash that does not start settling with careful barrier care also deserves review, because infection, allergy or another skin condition may be involved.

Ask whether the appearance fits irritant nappy rash, whether the paste ingredients could be aggravating the skin, and how long to continue it. If folds are involved, ask whether yeast treatment is appropriate and which product is suitable for the child’s age.
