Diaper Rash and Yeast Infection

Yeast can grow in warm, damp skin folds and may cause a bright red, shiny or sore rash around the nappy area. Small separate spots or bumps can appear just beyond the main rash. Irritant dermatitis, allergy and bacterial infection can look similar, so appearance alone cannot confirm the cause. In an adult, genital itching, soreness or unusual discharge may point to a vaginal yeast infection rather than a skin rash.

Change wet or soiled nappies promptly, rinse gently with lukewarm water, pat dry and allow short periods without a nappy when practical. Avoid fragranced wipes, harsh soap and scrubbing. Use a simple barrier ointment for moisture protection. If a clinician recommends an antifungal, apply it exactly as directed and keep it away from the eyes and mouth. Do not use steroid cream alone on a suspected yeast rash unless prescribed.

Arrange medical advice if the rash is not settling, spreads, cracks, bleeds, develops blisters or pus, or causes marked pain. Seek prompt help if a baby has fever, seems unusually sleepy, feeds poorly or has fewer wet nappies. Adults should seek assessment for severe vulval pain, pelvic pain, fever or a new discharge with an unpleasant smell.

Ask whether the rash looks like yeast or irritation, which product is suitable for the child or adult skin involved, how long to use it, and which warning signs require review.
