What should you know about diamond plaster of paris?

Short answer
Diamond plaster of Paris is a gypsum-based casting material that hardens around a padded support to help hold an injured body part still.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the material does
Plaster of Paris bandage is activated with water, wrapped over padding and shaped while it sets. It can support a broken bone, protect healing tissues or guide the position of a limb. A plaster cast is often moulded to the body, so the fit and the position of the joints matter as much as the material name.
Plaster is generally easier to shape than a rigid synthetic cast during the early fitting stage. It can also be used when swelling is expected, often as a temporary splint or initial cast. Your orthopaedic team chooses the construction, padding and follow-up plan according to the injury, swelling and required movement control.
Caring for a plaster cast
Keep the cast dry and do not insert objects inside it to scratch the skin. Elevate the limb when it is swollen, move the free fingers or toes gently if instructed, and use only the prescribed pain relief. Do not trim, loosen or repair the cast yourself; a damaged edge can press on the skin or reduce support.
Check the skin near the cast and watch whether swelling is changing. Attend scheduled reviews so the team can assess healing, fit and function. Never put weight through a leg cast unless your clinician has clearly permitted it.
When to seek urgent care
Contact urgent care for worsening pain, numbness, tingling, pale or blue fingers or toes, inability to move them, marked swelling, a wet or foul-smelling cast, fever, or a cast that has become tight, cracked or loose. Sudden calf pain or breathlessness also needs immediate medical attention.
Questions for your doctor
Ask why plaster was selected, how long it should stay on, whether you may walk or use the limb, how to protect it during bathing, and which changes require a same-day cast check.

Questions people ask
Can I make a plaster cast tighter at home?
No. Tightness can restrict circulation or compress nerves, so a trained clinician should assess and adjust it.
Is plaster used only for fractures?
No. It may also protect healing tissues or position a limb during treatment, depending on the clinical plan.
