Diabetes and body aches: what to know

Diabetes can affect nerves and circulation over time, sometimes causing burning, tingling or aching in the feet and legs. High or low glucose can also make you feel unwell, but widespread aches commonly occur with viral illnesses such as influenza or COVID-19. Thyroid problems, fibromyalgia and inflammatory or tropical infections can produce similar symptoms.

The pattern matters: note whether pain is local or widespread, whether it follows exercise, and whether fever, rash, cough, weakness, numbness or swollen joints are present. Body aches alone cannot identify their cause.

Rest from strenuous activity, drink fluids if appropriate for your health, and check glucose as advised in your diabetes plan. Keep a short record of pain, temperature, recent activity, new medicines and other symptoms. Do not change insulin or prescribed treatment because of aches without medical advice. Arrange a review if symptoms persist, recur or interfere with walking or sleep.

Seek urgent care for chest pain, trouble breathing, new one-sided weakness, severe dehydration, confusion, a very high or low glucose reading with symptoms, or rapidly worsening weakness. Fever with a new rash, severe headache or neck stiffness also needs prompt assessment.

Ask whether your pain pattern suggests nerve involvement, infection or a medicine effect, and whether you need an examination or blood tests.
