Diabetes and heart failure: what to know

Diabetes can affect blood vessels, the heart muscle, kidneys, and fluid balance. Symptoms may include breathlessness, tiredness, cough, swollen ankles, difficulty lying flat, or a faster or irregular heartbeat.

Keep appointments and take heart and glucose medicines exactly as prescribed unless your clinician changes them. Record symptoms, glucose results, swelling, and breathlessness. Ask before using anti-inflammatory pain medicines or supplements, as some products affect fluid balance or kidney function. A chronic disease review can bring medication checks, monitoring, and lifestyle advice into one plan.

Call emergency services for sudden severe breathlessness, chest pressure, fainting, blue lips, new confusion, or a rapid heartbeat with weakness. Contact your clinical team promptly if ankle swelling increases, you need more pillows to sleep, your cough worsens, or fluid seems to build up quickly.

Ask which symptoms should trigger a call, how to monitor fluid and glucose safely, and whether medicines need adjustment. Ask how kidney checks, blood pressure, activity, salt intake, and follow-up appointments fit together.
