What should you know about dexa whole body scan?

Short answer
A whole-body DEXA scan uses low-dose X-rays to estimate bone and soft-tissue composition, while a clinician decides what the findings mean for you.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Key limitation
- A scan cannot provide a diagnosis on its own
What whole-body means
During the examination, the scanner passes over the body while you lie still. Computer analysis separates estimates of bone mineral content, lean tissue, and fat tissue, sometimes showing regional distribution. The result is an imaging measurement, not a complete assessment of nutrition, fitness, bone strength, or disease.
A whole-body examination should not be confused with a focused bone-density scan. If the clinical question is fracture risk or osteoporosis, the clinician may recommend a site-specific protocol and interpret it alongside your history.
What to do before and after
Tell the imaging team about possible pregnancy, recent contrast imaging, metal devices, and any difficulty lying flat. Follow local instructions about clothing and food. Staying still helps the software create a usable measurement.
Keep the report and ask how it should be interpreted. If you repeat testing, the same facility and comparable procedure can make changes easier to discuss. Avoid making major treatment changes from a scan number alone.
When to seek care
This scan is planned rather than an emergency response. Seek urgent help for a new severe injury, inability to bear weight, sudden weakness, or severe breathing difficulty. Book a medical review for repeated low-impact fractures, unexplained weight or strength changes, recurrent falls, or risk factors for bone loss, including premature ovarian insufficiency.
Useful questions
Ask: Why is a whole-body scan being suggested? Would a focused bone-density scan answer the question better? Which measurements matter in my situation? Could recent illness, hydration, or exercise affect the result? When should we review the report?

Questions people ask
Is a whole-body DEXA scan the same as a bone-density scan?
No. A whole-body scan may include composition estimates, while a bone-density scan uses a focused protocol to assess bone mineral density for a clinical question.
What if I move during the scan?
Movement can reduce image quality or make measurements less reliable. Tell the operator if you are uncomfortable so the position can be adjusted safely.
