DEXA scan results and treatment

The report may compare your bone density with a reference group and describe whether bone loss is present. Clinicians also consider fractures, medicines such as long-term steroids, falls, family history, kidney or thyroid problems, and hormonal changes. One score does not decide treatment by itself, and a result should be explained in the context of your overall fracture risk.

Ask for a plain-language explanation of each reported score and whether the scan is reliable for the area measured. Depending on the assessment, the plan may include weight-bearing activity, fall prevention, calcium and vitamin D review, treatment of an underlying condition, prescription medicine, or monitoring. Do not start or stop supplements or prescription treatment without checking the dose and purpose with your clinician.

Tell your clinician about Premature Ovarian Insufficiency or other causes of hormonal change, because these details can affect the bone-health discussion. Keep a copy of the report for future comparisons.

Arrange medical review for new back or hip pain, a fracture after a small fall, loss of height, or repeated falls. Seek urgent care after a serious injury, severe sudden pain, visible deformity, numbness with weakness, or inability to walk. These symptoms need assessment regardless of when your next scan is planned.
