What should you know about DEXA scan nuclear medicine?

DEXA sends two low-dose X-ray beams through areas such as the hip and spine. The detector measures how the beams are absorbed to estimate bone mineral density. Nuclear medicine examinations generally involve a tracer that is taken into the body and detected later; that is not the usual process for DEXA.

Follow the imaging centre's instructions, wear clothing without troublesome metal, and report pregnancy or possible pregnancy. Mention recent contrast studies, implants and difficulty lying still. Bring your referral and a list of medicines or supplements so the team can decide whether any preparation is needed.

The scan itself is not a substitute for urgent assessment. Get prompt medical care for severe pain after an injury, inability to stand or walk, new limb weakness, or loss of bladder or bowel control. Contact the imaging service if you cannot safely transfer onto the table.

Ask whether your referral is for DEXA or another type of imaging, which body sites will be assessed, and who will interpret the report. If you have had a tracer scan recently, ask whether it affects scheduling or preparation.
