What should you know about DEXA scans for weight loss?

Short answer
A DEXA scan can show changes in fat mass, lean mass and bone density during a weight-loss plan, but it does not treat weight gain.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the result can tell you
Body weight can change for several reasons, including fluid shifts and changes in muscle or fat. DEXA provides a snapshot of regional and overall composition, so a clinician can compare later scans when the same method and suitable timing are used. It also reports bone mineral density, which is a separate finding from body fat. The result does not diagnose the cause of weight gain or predict exactly how your body will respond to a diet or exercise plan.
How to use it sensibly
Ask why the scan is being recommended and which result will guide your plan. Tell the imaging team if you may be pregnant, have recently had a contrast examination, or cannot lie still. Wear clothing without metal where possible and follow the centre’s preparation instructions. Pair the report with waist measurements, strength, nutrition, activity, medicines and relevant health conditions rather than judging progress from one number. A clinician may recommend follow-up only when it would change care.
When to seek medical care
Arrange a medical review for unexplained weight loss, rapid weight change, persistent vomiting or diarrhoea, marked weakness, fainting, swelling, or symptoms such as excessive thirst and frequent urination. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion or collapse. A DEXA appointment should not delay assessment of these symptoms; the scan cannot explain an acute illness.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether a DEXA scan will change your weight-management plan, which body-composition measures matter, how to prepare, and whether another test is more appropriate. You can also ask how bone density, medicines, menopause or Premature Ovarian Insufficiency may affect the interpretation.

Questions people ask
Can a DEXA scan make you lose weight?
No. It measures body composition; weight loss still depends on an appropriate clinical plan.
Is body fat the same as body weight?
No. Weight includes fat, lean tissue, bone mineral and body water, so the measures describe different features.
