What should you know about DEXA scan fat mass?

Short answer
A DEXA scan can estimate fat mass during a body-composition assessment, but the reading is not a diagnosis by itself.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Measurement
- An estimate of fat tissue from body-composition imaging
- Interpretation
- Needs context from symptoms, history, and the scan method
What the reading represents
A DEXA scanner separates the measured tissues into bone mineral, lean soft tissue, and fat estimates by analysing how X-ray beams pass through the body. A body-composition report may describe total fat mass and how it is distributed across regions. These figures are estimates influenced by positioning, hydration, equipment, and the method used by the centre.
Fat mass is different from body weight and does not describe fitness, health, or appearance on its own. It also cannot identify the cause of weight change or replace an assessment of diet, hormones, medicines, or other medical factors.
Use the result sensibly
Ask whether body composition was specifically requested or added to a bone-density examination. Keep the same scanner and comparable conditions if your clinician recommends repeat measurements, because changing equipment or preparation can make comparisons less meaningful. Discuss the result with a clinician who knows your medical history rather than changing food intake, exercise, or medicines in response to a single number.
When to seek medical help
Arrange a clinical review for unintentional weight loss, rapidly changing weight, persistent fatigue, or other symptoms alongside an unexpected result. Contact the imaging service if you need help understanding the report or if positioning was difficult. Seek urgent care for severe shortness of breath, fainting, or sudden weakness, regardless of the body-composition reading.
Questions to discuss
Ask which body regions were analysed, whether the result is comparable with any earlier scan, what limitations apply to the estimate, and whether another assessment is needed to understand a change in weight or body composition.

Questions people ask
Does DEXA fat mass diagnose obesity or another illness?
No. It provides an estimated body-composition measurement and cannot diagnose a condition by itself.
Can two fat-mass readings be compared?
They are easier to compare when the same equipment, method, positioning, and similar preparation are used.
