What should you know about a DEXA fitness scan?

Short answer
A DEXA fitness scan can describe body composition and bone density, not your complete physical fitness.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Can assess
- Bone mineral and estimated tissue composition
- Cannot assess directly
- Endurance, balance or flexibility
- Useful approach
- Interpret the report with clinical context
What the report covers
DEXA imaging estimates bone mineral and may divide lean and fat tissue into body regions. This can give a baseline for discussion with a clinician, sports professional or nutrition professional. It does not directly test stamina, power, flexibility, coordination, balance or exercise technique. A result should be read with your activity level, symptoms, medicines, medical conditions and goals rather than treated as a stand-alone score.
Before and after scanning
Check which analysis is included because some appointments focus on bone density while others add body-composition measurements. Wear clothing that allows easy positioning and follow the centre’s instructions about metal, food, supplements and medicines. Inform staff about possible pregnancy, recent contrast imaging or problems lying still. Keep a copy of the report, then agree on practical next steps with a qualified professional instead of making sudden changes based on a single measurement.
When to seek medical help
Arrange a clinical review for repeated falls, unexplained weakness, continuing pain, marked fatigue or unplanned weight change. Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, collapse, sudden trouble speaking or new weakness affecting one side. A fitness scan should not delay assessment of these symptoms.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether bone density or body composition is the main purpose, which measurements are relevant to your goals, and whether a follow-up is needed. Ask how to combine the report with strength, mobility and cardiovascular assessments.

Questions people ask
Is a DEXA fitness scan a fitness test?
It is an imaging assessment, not a performance test. It may describe body tissues and bone mineral but does not measure how you perform during exercise.
Can I use the result to plan a new workout?
Discuss it with a qualified professional, especially if you have pain, weakness, a medical condition or a history of fractures.
