Deviated septum and bloody nose: what to know

The septum is the wall between the nostrils. When it bends, air may move unevenly and dry the lining on the narrower or more exposed side. Dryness, rubbing, forceful nose blowing, colds, allergies, and crusting can then disturb small blood vessels near the front of the nose. A deviated septum is one possible contributor, not the only explanation for bleeding.

A blocked nose may lead to mouth breathing and repeated attempts to clear the nose. Allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, and other nasal inflammation can add to irritation. A nosebleed that starts after an injury, occurs often, or comes from deeper in the nose needs clinical assessment.

Sit upright, lean slightly forward, and pinch the soft part of the nose continuously for several minutes while breathing through your mouth. Do not tilt your head back, pick the clot, or keep checking before the pressure has had time to work. Afterward, avoid vigorous blowing, heavy exertion, and hot showers for a while.

Use gentle saline moisture if a clinician or pharmacist says it is suitable, and keep fingernails away from crusts. Seek urgent care if bleeding is heavy, you feel faint or weak, breathing is affected, blood follows a significant facial injury, or firm pressure does not stop it. Arrange a medical review for frequent episodes, easy bruising, bleeding from other sites, or blockage that stays on one side. A clinician can examine the nasal lining and septum and check for other causes.

Ask whether the bleeding point is visible, whether dryness or allergy is contributing, and whether the septum needs specialist assessment. You can also ask which moisturising treatment is appropriate and which nose sprays or medicines might worsen dryness.
