Description of Ovulation Pain

The ache or sharp twinge may occur on either side of the lower abdomen and can switch sides in different cycles. It may last minutes to hours and sometimes comes with a small amount of spotting or vaginal discharge. A recurring pattern around mid-cycle can support this explanation, but timing alone cannot confirm the cause.

A warm bath or heat pack, rest and gentle movement may help. Keep a brief record of the cycle day, side, duration and associated symptoms. Use pain relief only if it is suitable for you, particularly if pregnancy is possible or you have another medical condition.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for sudden severe pain, faintness, fever, vomiting, heavy bleeding, pain with a positive pregnancy test, or pain that persists or keeps returning outside your usual pattern. Conditions such as ovarian cysts or endometriosis can also cause pelvic pain and may need a different evaluation.
