What should you know about Dermovate and alopecia areata?

Alopecia areata is an immune-related condition in which hair grows in sharply defined areas of loss. A corticosteroid can reduce local inflammation, but it does not suit every person or every site. The scalp, face and other thin-skinned areas absorb medicine differently, so strength, amount and duration need careful direction.

Dermovate should not be assumed to treat every cause of hair loss. Scarring conditions, infection and other disorders need different care. A dermatologist may inspect the scalp and nails and may discuss alternatives such as injections or other medical treatments.

Use only the prescribed amount and apply it to the intended skin, avoiding the eyes and broken skin unless specifically instructed. Do not extend the course, cover the area or apply it to the face without medical advice. Tell the prescriber about other steroid products, pregnancy, breastfeeding, skin infections and medicines that affect immunity. Do not stop or restart treatment based only on hair growth changes.

Contact the prescriber if the treated skin becomes thin, unusually sensitive, infected-looking or persistently irritated, or if the hair loss expands despite the plan. Seek prompt assessment for painful scalp swelling, pus, fever, sudden widespread loss or loss of eyelashes or eyebrows. These features can require a different diagnosis or treatment approach.
