What should you know about dermoscopy vessels?

A dermatoscope magnifies and illuminates the surface of a lesion. This can reveal dots, lines, branching vessels or more diffuse redness that may be hard to see unaided. Vessel appearance is interpreted with the spot’s symmetry, pigment, surface and history; a vessel pattern alone does not establish a diagnosis. Irritation, inflammation and some benign growths can also make vessels more visible.

The clinician may compare the area with nearby skin or with earlier images. The question is whether the overall pattern fits a harmless lesion, an inflamed area or a lesion needing closer assessment.

If vessels were noted during a skin check, ask what feature prompted attention and whether the clinician recommends observation, a follow-up image or sampling. Avoid picking, squeezing or repeatedly rubbing the area before review. Record when you first noticed it and any changes in size, colour, border, bleeding or crusting. A dermatoscope is a diagnostic aid, not a treatment.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if a spot is changing, bleeds without a clear injury, develops persistent crusting, becomes tender or forms a new irregular area. Seek prompt care for rapid change or a sore that does not heal. Urgency depends on the visible change and symptoms, not simply on the presence of vessels.
