What should you know about dermoscopy of verruca vulgaris?

A dermatoscope lets the clinician inspect the lesion without scraping away its surface. A common wart may interrupt the normal skin lines and show small, clot-like vessels within a rough surface. Calluses and corns tend to have different relationships with skin lines and pressure points. The clinician also considers the location, duration, tenderness, exposure to other people’s warts, and whether the lesion has changed. Dermoscopy supports the clinical assessment; it does not replace the examination of an unusual or uncertain lesion.

Do not cut, burn, or repeatedly pick at the lesion at home, because this can injure nearby skin and spread viral material to other areas. Keep the area covered when appropriate, wash hands after touching it, and avoid sharing files, towels, or footwear used over the lesion. A clinician may discuss observation, topical treatment, freezing, electrical removal, or another wart-removal approach according to the site, thickness, symptoms, and previous response. Treatment choice should account for circulation, sensation, and any immune or skin conditions.

Arrange a review if a supposed wart bleeds without being picked, becomes persistently painful, ulcerates, changes quickly, or fails to behave like a typical rough lesion. Seek assessment for a mark on the face, genitals, or around a nail, where treatment can affect delicate structures. People with diabetes, reduced sensation, poor circulation, or a weakened immune system should obtain professional advice before using home wart products. Prompt evaluation is also sensible when the diagnosis is uncertain.

Ask what dermoscopic features support a wart, whether a callus or another lesion remains possible, and whether testing or removal is needed. Ask how to protect nearby skin, how contagious the lesion may be, and what signs should prompt a return visit.
