Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra Removal

DPN is usually harmless, so removal is generally chosen for appearance, snagging, shaving difficulty, or repeated irritation. A dermatologist first checks that the bumps have a typical appearance. A lesion that looks different from the others may need separate assessment before removal.

The number, size, thickness, and location of papules influence the plan. Facial and neck skin can be especially visible during healing, and darker skin tones may be more prone to noticeable colour change after inflammation or injury.

Ask which technique is proposed and whether a small area should be treated first. Options can include curettage and cautery or electrosurgery. These procedures remove or destroy the targeted tissue, but they do not prevent new DPN from appearing elsewhere over time.

Follow the clinic's wound-care instructions, keep the area clean, and avoid picking scabs. Protect healing skin from sun exposure as advised. Tell the clinician about a history of raised scars, pigment changes, poor wound healing, or medicines that affect bleeding.

Contact the treating clinic if pain, redness, warmth, swelling, or discharge is increasing rather than settling, or if bleeding does not stop with the instructed pressure. A new changing bump elsewhere should be examined rather than treated at home.
