Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra (DPN)

The bumps can be flat-topped, rounded, or attached by a narrow base. They range from barely raised spots to more prominent papules and may occur alone or in groups. DPN often affects the cheeks, temples, forehead, neck, and chest. A tendency to develop it can run in families, and the number of lesions may increase with age.

DPN is usually a clinical diagnosis. A dermatologist considers colour, texture, shape, location, and how the lesion has behaved over time. Because several skin conditions can resemble one another, examination is useful when a bump is new, changing, or uncertain.

Stable DPN does not require treatment for health reasons. Gentle cleansing and daily sun protection can help the surrounding skin stay comfortable and may make contrast with dark papules less noticeable, but creams do not reliably remove established growths.

Removal can be considered when lesions are cosmetically bothersome or repeatedly irritated. A dermatologist may use curettage and cautery or electrosurgery for selected papules. Discuss the possibility of temporary redness, scabbing, pigment alteration, or a scar before proceeding.

Book an appointment for a DPN-like spot that enlarges rapidly, changes in colour or outline, bleeds, crusts, remains tender, or forms a non-healing area. A symptom such as bleeding is a reason for assessment, not proof that the lesion is cancerous. Prompt review is also sensible when one lesion looks distinctly different from the rest.
