What should you know about a digital dermatoscope?

Instead of relying only on a clinician looking through a handheld lens, a digital system displays an enlarged image on a screen. The image may be stored in a clinical record or compared with a later image when monitoring is appropriate. Light, focus, pressure, and the angle of capture affect what can be seen, so a photograph is useful only when interpreted in its clinical context.

Digital images can support the review of moles, freckles, and other pigmented lesions, but they are not a verdict. A clinician considers symptoms, skin type, previous images, and the pattern of the lesion. If concern remains, tissue examination may be needed.

Tell the clinician which marks are new or changing and describe any itching, bleeding, soreness, or crusting. Remove covering makeup or creams from the area if requested. If you have older clinical photographs, ask whether they can be compared with the new images. Do not rely on a phone photograph to decide that a suspicious mark is harmless; an assessment includes lighting, magnification, and trained interpretation.

Book a review for a new or changing mark, especially one that differs from your other marks. Prompt attention is appropriate for a lesion that bleeds without a clear injury, repeatedly crusts, becomes an open sore, or changes quickly. A digital image can support triage and monitoring, but these warning signs still need a clinician’s examination.

Ask whether your images will be stored for comparison, what interval is suitable for follow-up, and which changes matter most. You can also ask how image findings relate to the rest of the examination and when a biopsy would be considered.
