On deeply pigmented skin, a dermatofibroma may look brown, deep brown, grey-brown, or close to the surrounding shade. Its firmness, smooth surface, inward dimpling, and stability over time can be as informative as colour contrast. Inflammation or injury around a lesion can also leave darker pigmentation. A clinician should examine the nodule in the context of your natural skin tone rather than using colour alone.

Take a clear photograph in natural light and record whether the area is itchy, tender, or repeatedly traumatised. Avoid picking or applying harsh lightening products to it. A dermatology review is useful for a new lesion, an uncertain diagnosis, or a nodule that is changing. If removal is discussed, ask about the chance of a darker or lighter mark after healing, as post-inflammatory pigment change can be a meaningful cosmetic concern on darker skin.

Seek prompt assessment for rapid growth, persistent bleeding, an ulcerated surface, increasing pain, or a new change in outline or colour. Colour differences can be subtle, so compare the lesion with its own earlier photographs and report any clear evolution. These findings signal the need for examination; they do not determine the diagnosis.

Ask how your baseline pigmentation affects the examination, whether dermoscopy or a biopsy would help, and how healing may alter the colour around the site. If excision is considered, ask about scar visibility, pigment changes, sun protection during healing, and alternatives to removing a stable lesion.
