Dermal fillers in pregnancy: what to know

Dermal filler is an injection that deliberately creates a temporary change in tissue. Pregnancy can alter skin sensitivity, swelling, immune responses, and how you weigh medicines or procedures. Because filler is usually cosmetic rather than medically necessary, many clinicians recommend waiting until after pregnancy and, where relevant, breastfeeding. The decision should be individualised rather than based on a social-media claim or a product label alone.

Deferring treatment does not mean that a pregnant person has done anything wrong. Facial changes during pregnancy can include dryness, pigmentation, puffiness, and altered volume, and these may change again after delivery. A clinician can help distinguish a cosmetic concern from a new skin problem needing assessment.

Tell the injector and your maternity clinician about the pregnancy or possibility of pregnancy before booking or attending. Postpone elective filler unless both clinicians give a specific reason to proceed. Do not start, stop, or use medicines to prepare for an injection without medical advice. If filler was placed before you knew you were pregnant, contact your maternity clinician and the treating clinic with the product name, treatment date, area, and any symptoms; do not panic or arrange removal without assessment.

Seek advice for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pain, discharge, fever, or a new tender lump at an injection site. Get urgent medical help for sudden vision change, severe facial pain, unusual skin colour, weakness, confusion, or trouble speaking after an injection. Pregnancy-related symptoms such as heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, severe headache, or reduced fetal movement also require prompt maternity advice.
