Depression and shortness of breath: what to know

Short answer
Depression can make breathing feel difficult through anxiety, tension, and reduced activity, but new or severe breathlessness needs medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Also called
- Breathlessness or dyspnoea
- Key point
- Breathlessness has emotional and physical causes
How the symptoms may connect
Low mood may reduce movement and fitness, making ordinary activity feel harder. Worry can also cause fast, shallow breathing, chest tightness, or a sense that you cannot get a satisfying breath. Shortness of breath is not specific to depression: asthma, anaemia, heart problems, airway conditions, and infection can also cause it. A symptom of breathlessness does not establish depression or any other diagnosis.
Practical next steps
Arrange a clinician’s review if the sensation is new, recurring, or limiting walking, sleep, or daily tasks. Note when it begins, what you were doing, whether wheeze or chest discomfort occurs, and whether rest changes it. Gentle activity within your comfort, regular meals, and paced breathing may help while you arrange care. Do not stop prescribed medicines or assume the symptom is emotional without an examination.
When breathing trouble is urgent
Seek emergency help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, fainting, confusion, sudden facial or throat swelling, or chest pressure. Urgent assessment is also needed when breathlessness starts suddenly, follows a serious allergic exposure, or occurs with marked weakness. Conditions such as asthma, anaphylaxis, angina, and COPD require different treatment.
Questions for your doctor
Could a lung, heart, blood, or medication problem explain this feeling? What checks are appropriate? How can I tell anxiety-related breathing changes from a sign that needs urgent care? Which activity and breathing techniques are suitable for me?

Questions people ask
Can depression cause a feeling of not getting enough air?
It can contribute through anxiety, muscle tension, shallow breathing, and reduced conditioning, but a clinician should assess unexplained breathlessness.
Should I seek help for breathlessness with low mood?
Yes, especially if it is new or affects activity. Emergency care is needed for severe, sudden, or rapidly worsening breathing difficulty.
