What should you know about depression and ED?

Short answer

Depression can reduce sexual desire and make erections harder to achieve or maintain, while worry about sexual performance can deepen low mood; both concerns deserve assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Possible effects
Mood changes may affect desire, arousal and erection quality.
First step
Book a confidential assessment and bring a full medicine list.
Urgent concern
Seek immediate help for suicidal thoughts or an unusually prolonged painful erection.

What the connection can mean

Low mood, reduced interest, tiredness and difficulty concentrating can interfere with sexual intimacy. Depression may also change sleep and motivation, making sexual activity feel less appealing. Medicines used for depression can affect libido or erection quality in some people, so do not stop a prescribed medicine without medical advice. Erectile difficulty can also have physical contributors, including blood-vessel or hormone problems, and it is not proof that depression is the only cause.

A single difficult experience is common and does not establish a diagnosis. Ongoing difficulty, loss of interest, or distress is worth discussing in a confidential appointment.

What you can do

Arrange an assessment with a GP or mental-health professional. Mention when the erection changes began, whether morning or spontaneous erections occur, changes in desire, sleep, alcohol or recreational drug use, and every medicine or supplement you take. A clinician can review mood symptoms, physical health and treatment effects, then discuss options such as talking therapy, changes to depression treatment, or treatment directed at erections when suitable. Gentle activity, regular sleep times, limiting alcohol and talking openly with a partner may support recovery, but they do not replace assessment.

When to seek care

Seek prompt medical help if low mood is persistent, daily functioning is deteriorating, or sexual difficulties continue and cause distress. Get urgent help now if you may harm yourself, feel unable to stay safe, or have thoughts of suicide; contact local emergency services or a crisis service and stay with someone trusted. An erection lasting several hours with significant pain needs emergency care.

Questions for your doctor

Could depression, a medicine, or a physical condition be affecting my erections? Should we review my current treatment? What checks are appropriate? Would talking therapy or an erectile-difficulty treatment suit me? How should I seek help if my mood becomes unsafe?

Questions people ask

Can depression cause erectile dysfunction?

Depression can contribute to erectile difficulty through low desire, reduced arousal, fatigue, anxiety and changes in brain signalling. Physical causes and medicine effects can also contribute.

Should I stop my antidepressant if erections change?

No. Speak with the prescriber first. They can review timing, benefits, side effects and safer treatment options with you.

When is erectile difficulty urgent?

An erection that remains for several hours, especially with pain, needs emergency assessment. Urgent help is also needed for thoughts of self-harm or suicide.
