Symptoms after the Depo birth control shot

Some effects settle as the body adjusts, while irregular bleeding or absent periods may continue. A new or severe symptom should be assessed rather than automatically attributed to the injection.

The injection contains a progestogen that suppresses ovulation and changes the uterine lining. This can lead to spotting, unpredictable bleeding, lighter periods or no periods. Breast tenderness, nausea, dizziness, acne, reduced sexual interest and changes in weight or appetite can also occur.

Symptoms can have causes unrelated to contraception. Pelvic pain with unusual bleeding, for example, warrants clinical assessment. Cervical cancer can present with abnormal vaginal bleeding, including bleeding after sex, but that symptom alone does not identify its cause.

Keep a simple record of bleeding, pain, headaches and mood changes, including when they began and how they affect daily activities. For injection-site soreness, protect the area from pressure and use a cool compress wrapped in cloth.

Contact the prescribing clinic if bleeding is troublesome, headaches are new or worsening, mood changes persist, or you are considering stopping. The clinician can check for another cause, discuss symptom relief and help arrange a different contraceptive method before protection lapses. Mention any personal history of blood clots, bone concerns or medicines that have changed.

Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, chest pain, coughing blood, sudden weakness, a severe unusual headache, vision or speech changes, fainting, or swelling and pain in one leg. Heavy bleeding accompanied by dizziness, weakness or severe pelvic pain also needs prompt assessment.

Seek immediate care for facial or throat swelling or widespread hives after an injection. If you may be pregnant and develop sharp one-sided pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain or faintness, emergency assessment is needed.

Ask whether your bleeding pattern fits the expected effect of the shot, whether pregnancy or another condition should be excluded, and what options can ease symptoms. Confirm when contraceptive protection may wear off and how to transition safely if you choose another method.
