Dengue without fever symptoms

Fever is a common feature of dengue, but a person may be checked after fever has settled, may have measured temperature inaccurately, or may have a mild illness. Headache, muscle aches, joint pain, chills, rash, nausea, or easy bruising can still provide useful clues.

These symptoms are not specific to dengue, and they do not prove that dengue is present. A clinician combines the pattern with mosquito exposure, travel or residence history, medicines, examination findings, and the timing of illness.

Record temperature readings, the date symptoms began, fluid intake, urine changes, new rash, and any bleeding. Drink regularly and rest. Avoid aspirin or ibuprofen until a clinician has advised that they are suitable. Arrange a GP consultation if dengue is possible, especially after relevant travel or mosquito exposure.

Seek urgent care for bleeding, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, breathing difficulty, faintness, confusion, unusual sleepiness, cold clammy skin, or inability to drink. The lack of fever should not delay assessment when these signs are present.
