Dengue virus NS1 antigen test

NS1 refers to a protein released by dengue virus while the virus is multiplying. A positive result can support a diagnosis when symptoms and exposure history fit, but a test result is interpreted alongside the examination and other available tests. A negative result does not always exclude dengue, particularly when the sample timing or illness stage is unsuitable.

Dengue may cause fever, headache, joint pain, muscle aches or chills. Easy bruising or bleeding needs attention even if an initial test result is negative.

Tell the clinician when the fever began, where you have travelled, whether mosquitoes were present and which medicines you have taken. The clinician may recommend an NS1 test, another dengue test, repeat testing or observation depending on timing and findings. Do not wait for a result before asking how to manage fluids and fever safely.

Seek prompt assessment for suspected dengue with persistent fever, worsening weakness, severe headache, vomiting, abdominal pain or reduced drinking. Go to urgent care for bleeding, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fainting, confusion, breathing difficulty or unusual drowsiness. These warning signs matter even if an NS1 result is pending or negative.

Ask whether the timing of your sample makes NS1 testing useful, whether another test or repeat sample is needed, how results will change your care, and which warning signs require immediate review.
