When can a dengue test become positive?

Some tests look for parts of the dengue virus and are more useful during the earlier phase of symptoms. Other tests look for antibodies produced by your immune system, which may take time to appear and can remain detectable after the acute illness. Your clinician interprets the result alongside the fever timeline, examination and local exposure risk. Dengue fever commonly presents with fever, headache, muscle aches or joint pain, but a positive result should still be discussed because the clinical stage affects monitoring.

Contact the clinician or service that arranged the test so you understand the next review. Rest, take fluids regularly, and monitor urination and new symptoms. Use paracetamol only if it is suitable for you and follow the labelled or prescribed directions; ask before using aspirin or anti-inflammatory pain medicines because they may worsen bleeding. Avoid passing infection to mosquitoes by reducing mosquito bites while you are unwell. Record the day fever started and any changes in vomiting, rash, bleeding or alertness.

Go to urgent care for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding, black stools, blood in vomit, breathing difficulty, fainting, confusion, unusual sleepiness, or inability to keep fluids down. Get help promptly if a child, older adult, pregnant person, or someone with a significant medical condition becomes unwell. A positive result is not a reason to manage serious symptoms at home.

Ask which test was positive, what stage of illness it suggests, when your blood or clinical review should be repeated, and which symptoms should prompt immediate return.
