Dengue spots on the body: what they may mean

A dengue-related rash may appear as scattered red areas or small spots on the skin. Tiny spots that do not fade when pressed can reflect bleeding under the skin, although other conditions can look similar. The skin finding is only one part of the assessment; fever, chills, headache, muscle aches and joint pain provide useful context.

A photo can help show how the spots change, but it cannot replace an examination. Note when the marks began, where they are located, whether they itch or hurt, and whether bruises or bleeding are appearing elsewhere.

Contact a GP Consultation service if you have a new unexplained rash with fever, especially after mosquito exposure or travel in an area where dengue occurs. Drink fluids if you can, rest, and avoid scratching or activities that could injure the skin. Do not take aspirin or anti-inflammatory painkillers unless a clinician has recommended them, because bleeding can be a concern.

Check your gums, nose, urine and stool for bleeding, and tell the clinician about any new medicines. Avoid sharing towels or close mosquito exposure around someone who is unwell; dengue itself is not normally passed by ordinary touch.

Seek urgent care if spots rapidly increase, bruising appears without an obvious injury, bleeding does not stop, or you have severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, unusual sleepiness, confusion, fainting, breathing difficulty or very little urine. A rash can be mild, but bleeding signs and a sudden change in how you feel need prompt assessment.

Ask whether the spots look like a rash or bleeding under the skin, whether you need blood tests, which medicines are safe, and what changes should prompt emergency help. Ask how to protect the skin and when a follow-up review is needed.
