What should you know about dengue risk factors?

Risk is shaped by where you live or travel, how often mosquitoes can reach you, and whether standing water allows them to breed nearby. Daytime and indoor bites are possible, so protection is relevant at home, work, and while travelling. A previous dengue infection does not make future illness impossible; tell a clinician about earlier dengue if you become unwell.

Use a suitable mosquito repellent as directed, wear clothing that covers exposed skin, and keep doors and windows screened where possible. Empty water from containers, plant saucers, buckets, and other items around the home. If travelling, ask a clinician or travel service about local conditions and personal precautions before departure. These measures lower bites but cannot remove every exposure.

Arrange prompt medical advice for fever after possible exposure, particularly when accompanied by headache, chills, muscle aches, joint pain, or easy bruising. Seek urgent care for bleeding, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, faintness, confusion, or trouble breathing. A GP consultation can help assess symptoms and decide on testing.
