Dengue prevention medicine

There is no general tablet that prevents every dengue infection after mosquito exposure. Some settings may offer vaccination, but eligibility depends on factors such as age, previous dengue infection, health history and local guidance. A vaccine does not remove the need for repellent, covered clothing and screens. It also cannot treat an illness that has already started.

Ask a clinician or travel-medicine service whether vaccination is relevant before travel or living in an affected area. Share pregnancy, immune conditions, allergies and previous dengue history. Do not self-start antibiotics or unlabelled products for prevention. Use repellent correctly, cover skin and remove standing water around the home. Seek medical review for fever, headache, muscle aches, joint pain or chills after possible exposure. Obtain urgent help for bleeding, easy bruising, repeated vomiting, severe abdominal pain, confusion, faintness or breathing difficulty. Tell the clinician about recent travel and any vaccine or medicine already taken.
