What does the platelet count show in dengue?

Platelets support normal clotting. Dengue can affect blood cells and fluid balance, so a clinician may review platelet results alongside the blood count, examination and changes over time. A low result does not by itself predict what will happen, and a single test should not be interpreted in isolation.

Easy bruising, nose or gum bleeding, blood in vomit or stool, or unusually heavy bleeding are clinically meaningful symptoms. They need attention regardless of the reported number. Fever, headache and aches can occur with dengue but are not specific to it.

Discuss the result with the clinician who ordered it and follow instructions about repeat testing, fluids and activity. Do not take aspirin or anti-inflammatory pain medicines unless a clinician approves them. Avoid contact activities if you have been advised that bleeding risk is increased.

Go to urgent care for bleeding that does not stop, black stools, blood in vomit, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, faintness, confusion, breathing difficulty or worsening weakness. Do not wait for a repeat platelet result when these symptoms are present.
