What does dengue occur due to?

The virus enters the bloodstream through the bite. A person may then develop fever, headache, muscle aches, joint pain or chills. A symptom such as fever does not by itself show that dengue is the cause; several infections can feel similar. A clinical assessment and, when appropriate, testing help clarify the diagnosis.

Dengue is not spread by ordinary casual contact. Mosquito exposure is the key link, so reducing bites also helps protect other people nearby. Easy bruising or bleeding can be a warning sign of a more serious illness and needs prompt medical attention.

If dengue is possible, arrange a GP Consultation and describe your fever, travel or mosquito exposure, and when symptoms began. Rest, drink fluids regularly, and follow the clinician’s advice about medicines. Avoid taking aspirin or anti-inflammatory pain medicines unless a clinician tells you to use them, because they may increase bleeding risk in some situations.

Seek urgent medical care for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, unusual sleepiness or restlessness, trouble breathing, bleeding from the nose or gums, blood in vomit or stool, or rapidly worsening weakness. A drop in fever does not always mean the illness is over, so continue watching for warning signs.

Ask whether your symptoms and exposure history fit dengue, whether testing is useful now, how much fluid to drink, which pain relievers are suitable, and which changes should prompt immediate review.
