What does dengue NS1 mean?

NS1 is a substance associated with dengue virus in the blood. A positive finding supports dengue infection at the time of testing. A negative finding may need cautious interpretation because detectability changes during illness and no test works in isolation. Your clinician considers the report, examination, symptom onset and any other blood results together.

Fever is a common presentation of dengue fever, which can also include chills, headache, muscle aches and joint pain. These symptoms can have other causes. Easy bruising or any bleeding is a warning sign that calls for medical assessment rather than an assumption about what the NS1 result means.

Bring the report to a GP consultation and state the day your symptoms started. Ask how to maintain fluids and control discomfort safely. Avoid aspirin and anti-inflammatory medicines such as ibuprofen until a healthcare professional confirms they are appropriate. Follow instructions for repeat assessment, blood counts or additional dengue testing.

Seek urgent care for severe stomach pain, ongoing vomiting, bleeding, black or bloody stool, confusion, extreme weakness, fainting, trouble breathing or inability to drink. These problems can arise while fever is improving, so do not use a lower temperature as the only guide to recovery.
