Can you have dengue without a fever?

A single temperature reading can miss changes over the course of an illness. Fever may have settled, a fever-reducing medicine may have lowered it, or the thermometer may not reflect the body’s full pattern. Some people may have mild or unusual symptoms.

Headache, muscle aches, joint pain, chills, or easy bruising can occur with dengue, but each can also result from other conditions. Not having fever does not prove dengue, and having one of these symptoms does not identify its cause.

Write down symptoms, temperature readings, medicines taken, recent travel, and possible mosquito exposure. Drink regularly if you can and avoid further bites with repellent, covered clothing, and screens.

Contact a GP Consultation service if symptoms fit dengue or you have relevant exposure, even without a current fever. A clinician can decide whether examination or testing is useful and explain which medicines are suitable.

Seek urgent care for bleeding, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fainting, confusion, trouble breathing, extreme sleepiness, or inability to keep fluids down. Do not wait for a fever to appear if any of these symptoms occur.
