- Prevent mosquito bites
How dengue spreads
Dengue passes through the bite of an infected mosquito. A person with dengue can help mosquitoes pick up the virus, especially while feverish, so bite protection matters during illness as well as travel or outdoor activity. Dengue is not usually spread by casual contact such as sharing a room or touching someone.
Steps that lower exposure
Use an approved insect repellent as directed, wear loose clothing that covers arms and legs, and keep doors or windows screened where possible. Sleep under a mosquito net if screens are unavailable. Empty, cover or clean containers that hold water, including plant saucers, buckets, roof gutters and outdoor toys. Ask household members to check shaded areas because mosquitoes can breed in small amounts of still water.
If fever, chills, headache, muscle aches or joint pain develops after possible exposure, arrange a GP Consultation. Stay protected from bites while symptoms continue and follow medical advice about testing and rest.
When to seek medical help
Contact a clinician for a high or persistent fever, especially after travel or residence in an area where dengue occurs. Seek urgent help for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding, marked weakness, confusion, breathing difficulty, fainting or inability to drink. Easy Bruising with a febrile illness needs prompt assessment.
Questions to ask
Ask which repellent is suitable for your skin, how long to continue bite protection, whether testing is appropriate, and which symptoms require emergency care. If you are travelling, ask how to reduce exposure at your destination.
