What should you know about dengue fever will spread to others?

When dengue virus is present in a person's blood, a mosquito that bites them can acquire the virus. If that mosquito later bites another person, it may transmit dengue. This is why a person with suspected dengue should avoid mosquito bites. Hugging, kissing, sharing a bathroom, and sharing food are not the usual ways dengue passes between people.

Possible symptoms include Fever, headache, chills, muscle aches, joint pain, and easy bruising. A symptom does not establish the cause, and someone without symptoms may still need advice after relevant exposure.

Use repellent, long clothing, screens, air conditioning, or a mosquito net while fever or suspected dengue is present. Remove standing water from containers around the home and keep doors and windows protected where possible. Household members should also reduce their own exposure to bites.

Arrange a GP Consultation and explain when symptoms began, where exposure may have occurred, and whether anyone else is unwell. Follow the clinician's advice about fluids, medicines, testing, and follow-up.

Seek urgent assessment for bleeding, new or worsening bruising, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fainting, confusion, breathing difficulty, severe weakness, or inability to drink. A sudden deterioration around the time a fever settles is also a reason to seek help promptly.

Ask how long to continue mosquito protection, whether close contacts need monitoring, which symptoms require emergency help, and how to manage fluids and fever safely.
