What is the test for dengue fever called?

Dengue testing may include an NS1 antigen test, a molecular test, or antibody tests chosen according to illness timing. These tests use a blood sample and look for evidence of current or recent infection. The exact test name can differ between laboratories, so take the laboratory report to the clinician who requested it.

NS1 antigen and molecular testing are generally used earlier in illness, while IgM and IgG antibody testing reflects the immune response and may be more informative later. A negative result does not always exclude dengue if the sample was taken at an unhelpful time. Fever, headache, joint pain, muscle aches, chills, or easy bruising still need clinical consideration.

Tell the clinician when symptoms began, where you have travelled, whether mosquitoes were present, and which medicines you have taken. Do not delay a GP Consultation while trying to identify the test name yourself. Drink fluids and follow advice about fever relief; avoid aspirin or ibuprofen unless prescribed or approved for you.

Seek urgent care for bleeding, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, faintness, breathing difficulty, confusion, or inability to keep fluids down. These warning signs require assessment regardless of whether a test result is pending or was initially negative.
