How dengue spreads
Dengue is spread by infected mosquitoes, so prevention centres on the mosquito rather than on avoiding ordinary contact with a person who is ill. Mosquitoes can breed in small amounts of standing water around homes, balconies, gardens and work areas. Risk can remain relevant during warm or rainy periods, and travel can add exposure.
Steps that help
Use an insect repellent as directed, wear loose clothing that covers arms and legs, and use screens or air conditioning where available. Sleep under a mosquito net when the room is not screened. Empty, scrub or cover containers that collect water, including plant saucers, buckets and outdoor toys. Keep water storage sealed and dispose of items that hold rainwater. If you develop fever after possible exposure, arrange a GP Consultation and mention travel or mosquito exposure.
When to seek medical help
Seek prompt medical advice for fever with severe headache, marked muscle or Joint Pain, chills, repeated vomiting, abdominal pain, unusual bleeding or Easy Bruising. Urgent assessment is needed for breathing difficulty, faintness, confusion, extreme weakness or inability to drink. A Fever can have many causes; these symptoms need assessment rather than a guess at the diagnosis.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which repellents suit your skin, how to protect children, and whether symptoms or recent travel change the timing of an assessment.
