How dengue fever is transmitted

A mosquito becomes infected after biting a person who has dengue virus in their blood. The mosquito can then pass the virus when it bites another person. Dengue does not usually spread through ordinary household contact such as sitting beside someone or sharing a meal. After infection, symptoms may include fever, headache, chills, muscle aches, joint pain, nausea or rash. Easy bruising or bleeding is a reason to seek medical advice.

If you have fever or suspected dengue, use repellent, wear clothing that covers arms and legs, and stay in a screened or netted space when possible. Remove standing water around the home, where mosquitoes can breed. Rest and drink fluids, and arrange a GP Consultation if symptoms begin after possible exposure. Do not rely on transmission details to self-diagnose; several illnesses can cause fever and aches.

Obtain urgent care for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding, black stools, fainting, confusion, breathing difficulty or inability to drink. Continue precautions even if fever improves, because serious warning signs can develop during that transition. Prompt assessment is also sensible when a young child, pregnant person or medically vulnerable adult has a suspected dengue illness.

Ask whether your exposure could fit dengue, how long to use mosquito precautions, whether household mosquito control is needed, which symptoms require emergency help, and whether testing or follow-up is appropriate.
