Introduction to dengue fever

Dengue is caused by a virus carried by certain mosquitoes. Illness can range from mild to serious. Fever may occur with headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle aches, joint pain, chills, nausea or a skin rash. Easy bruising or other bleeding needs attention. The presence of one symptom does not identify the cause, and a medical history, examination and sometimes testing help distinguish dengue from other febrile illnesses.

Rest, take frequent drinks and choose light food as tolerated. Check your temperature and note vomiting, urine output, rash or bleeding. Use medicines only after checking with a clinician or pharmacist, especially if dengue is possible. A person who is unwell should avoid mosquito bites so local mosquitoes do not acquire the virus. Repellent, loose long clothing, window screens and bed nets can help.

Contact a GP Consultation service for advice about a new fever after mosquito exposure or travel. Go to urgent care for severe abdominal pain, ongoing vomiting, bleeding, fainting, confusion, unusual drowsiness, difficulty breathing or inability to keep fluids down. Arrange help promptly if a child, older adult, pregnant person or someone with a long-term condition becomes unwell.
