What should you know about dengue fever 2nd time?

Dengue viruses have different types. Protection after one infection is not the same as protection against every type. During a later infection, the immune response can contribute to leakage of fluid from blood vessels and problems with bleeding or circulation. This does not mean that every repeat infection becomes severe. Fever, headache, muscle aches, joint pain, nausea and rash can still be mild, while warning signs may emerge as the fever improves.

Contact a clinician early and tell them when the earlier dengue illness occurred, whether it was confirmed, your current symptoms, recent travel and any medicines taken. Sip fluids regularly, rest and track urination, vomiting, abdominal pain, rash and bruising. Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen and other anti-inflammatory pain medicines unless a clinician tells you to use them. Prevent mosquito bites while feverish.

Go to urgent care for severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding, black stools, unusual drowsiness, agitation, cold or clammy skin, breathing difficulty, fainting or reduced urine. Do not wait for a test result when warning signs are present. People who are pregnant, very young, older, dehydrated or living with chronic illness should seek advice promptly.
